Dr. Myron Lewis is the recipient of a United Hero Award from UnitedHealthcare.

Dr. Myron Lewis, family practice physician at HIMG, was awarded the United Hero Award by UnitedHealthcare.

United Hero Awards are presented to doctors who achieve target scores in three categories of the UnitedHealthcare patient experience survey: getting needed care, care coordination and doctor-patient conversations.

Lewis said it is important to him to develop a relationship with his patients so they can feel comfortable discussing their health issues.

“I think being humble is important – knowing what you don’t know,” Lewis said. “I try to address patients’ problems to the best of my ability, but if I feel they need specialty care, I’m never afraid to refer them to specialists.”

He said it feels good to know the patients have confidence in him.

“I am just one of many primary care physicians here at HIMG, and even in the Huntington area, who do a great job,” he said. “I have been with HIMG for 28 years, and there are primary care doctors who have been with this group longer than I have, whom I have learned a lot from. It takes an entire team to accomplish, from registration to nurses to the front desk that take patient phone calls – all of that plays into a patients’ satisfaction with their care.”

Dr. Lewis graduated summa cum laude from Western Carolina University of Cullowhee, North Carolina in 1990. He earned his medical degree from West Virginia University School of Medicine in 1994. During his residency program at Kanawha Valley Family Practice, the fourth-year medical students nominated him as family medicine resident of the year. He is certified by the American Academy of Family Practice. Dr. Lewis has been with HIMG since 1997.
