Marshall Health Network (MHN) is aligning its systemwide surgical capabilities with the creation of a new surgical services service line, designed to strengthen coordination, quality and growth across surgical programs throughout the health system.

To lead the clinical strategy for the new service line, MHN has named Anthony Dempsey, M.D., as physician executive for surgical services.

Dempsey will work closely with Phillip Conley, vice president of perioperative surgical services, forming a dyad leadership model that integrates clinical and operational leadership across the network. He will report to MHN’s chief operating officer and chief physician executive.

“The creation of a systemwide surgical service line allows us to align our surgical teams, technology and resources to better serve patients across the region,” said Regina Campbell, chief operating officer of Marshall Health Network. “Dr. Dempsey’s leadership and clinical expertise will help strengthen surgical quality, drive innovation and support continued growth across our surgical programs.”

Dempsey is a clinical assistant professor at the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and recently served as divisional chief of perioperative and surgical services at Marshall Health Network.

In his new role, he will help guide strategic planning, quality initiatives and operational integration across surgical specialties. His responsibilities include advancing surgical innovation, improving perioperative care, supporting recruitment and development of surgical specialists, and optimizing operating room performance across MHN facilities.

Dempsey and Conley will also collaborate with leaders across Marshall Health Network and the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine to support surgical education, research and innovation aligned with the system’s academic mission.

Through this new leadership structure, Marshall Health Network aims to further strengthen surgical excellence and expand access to advanced surgical care for patients across West Virginia, eastern Kentucky and southeastern Ohio.
