Breast cancer support group returns to Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center Oct. 5

Support groups across Marshall Health Network provide connection, encouragement and community throughout treatment and survivorship 

Marshall Health Network – Edward Cancer Institute is bringing its Sisters of HOPE Breast Cancer Support Group back to the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center (ECCC), providing a welcoming place for breast cancer patients and survivors to connect with others who understand the challenges and experiences that come with a cancer diagnosis. 

The free support group will meet at 5:30 p.m. on the first Monday of every other month, beginning Monday, Oct. 5, at the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center (ECCC), 1400 Hal Greer Blvd. in Huntington. The first meeting will feature Marshall Health Network dietitian Jessie Owens, who will discuss nutrition for breast cancer patients and survivors. Following the support group meeting, a special ceremony will light the ECCC pink in honor of breast cancer warriors. 

“Cancer care extends well beyond treatment,” said Melissa Sheppard, R.N., manager of breast services at Cabell Huntington Hospital and Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center. “Connecting with others who have shared similar experiences can be an important part of healing and survivorship. Support groups create a sense of community where patients and survivors can encourage one another, share experiences and know they don’t have to navigate their cancer journey alone.” 

Support groups can play an important role throughout cancer treatment and survivorship, offering a supportive setting to share experiences, ask questions and learn from others navigating similar challenges. For some, that connection is especially valuable during treatment. For others, it becomes increasingly important during survivorship as they adjust to life after active treatment. 

In addition to Sisters of HOPE at Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center, Marshall Health Network offers a monthly breast cancer support group at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington that has been bringing patients and survivors together since 2003. Both groups provide opportunities to connect, share experiences and find encouragement from others who understand the breast cancer journey.

Both groups are open to current breast cancer patients and survivors. Participants are encouraged to bring a friend, family member or other support person. No registration is required.
