Marshall Health Network highlights the role of laboratory professionals in patient care week

When patients receive blood work, a diagnosis or emergency treatment, laboratory professionals are often working behind the scenes to make it possible.

Marshall Health Network (MHN) is recognizing the vital role of its laboratory teams during Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, April 19-25.

Each year, billions of lab tests help guide health care decisions across the country. From routine screenings to complex diagnostics, these tests play a key role in detecting disease, monitoring conditions and ensuring patients receive the right treatment at the right time.

“At some point, nearly every patient relies on lab testing as part of their care,” said Krista Denning, M.D., chair and professor of pathology at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and medical director of Marshall Health Network laboratories. “Our teams are focused on delivering accurate, timely results that physicians depend on to make informed decisions.”

Using advanced technology, laboratory professionals and pathologists analyze a wide range of specimens, including blood, tissue, bacteria and viruses, providing essential data for diagnosis and treatment. They also play a key role in life-saving efforts, such as ensuring safe blood transfusions in emergency situations.

“Working behind the scenes, many do not realize the impact laboratory results have on clinical outcomes,” said Matthew Brooks, MLS(ASCP)CM, system director of clinical laboratory services at MHN. “Laboratory testing accounts for an estimated 75% of the decision-making process in a patient’s treatment plan and is essential to diagnosing illness and disease.”

During Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, MHN encourages the community to recognize and thank the dedicated professionals who make timely, accurate results possible.
